Today, one of my 17 yr old students asked me if i thought "homo's" were nice people. "Miss," he says, "do you think they're nice? and are they nicer than straight people?" In response, I think I started by giving him a death glare. Then I told him a couple of things.
"I think perhaps you should not refer to gay people as 'homo's'."
"I don't think your sexuality/sexual orientation/sexual preference has anything to do with how nice you are."
What I wanted to say was:
"Where do you get this shit?!?"
"What have your parents and your peers told/taught you?"
"How does this affect you?"
Ugh.
What is wrong with people???
ReplyDeleteAt my work place there's this guy... everytime someone do something he doesn't like or that he think is wrong, he calls them gay. How stupid is that?...
I honestly think this kind of behaviour is people actually afraid of their own sexuality
He's young and shakey in his sexual identity. He imagines that he is more hetero if he uses a pejorative term for that which he fears. He was trying to send you a semiotic which said " I'm straight. Do you fancy me?" - Funny how our social mores dictate our twisted needs...
